Bacsinszky breaks through for first career title at Luxembourg
Luxembourg, Luxembourg (Sports Network) - Swiss Timea Bacsinszky earned her first career WTA Tour crown Sunday at the $220,000 Luxembourg Open, upending sixth-seeded German Sabine Lisicki.
Bacsinszky notched a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Lisicki, one day after ousting the fifth seed, Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals to reach her first ever final. The unseeded 20-year-old's best previous finishes were a pair of 2009 semifinal ousters in Prague and Istanbul.
Lisicki outlasted Shahar Peer in the semis here Saturday, emerging with a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) win to reach her third career championship match. She won her maiden title earlier this year at Charleston and is now 1-2 in career finals.
Bacsinszky claimed $37,000 for her first career win.
