  • Unfortunately for Serena, the most entertaining thing she did was berate that line judge at the U.S. Open.

The powerful American stole the Open spotlight for all the wrong reasons after directing some choice expletives at the linesperson, who was on the bad end of a verbal tirade after calling an untimely foot fault on Serena with a big match in the balance.

WTA

  • Pennetta posted a 7-5, 6-2 triumph to give Italy an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five tie.

Italy captured its first Fed Cup crown in 2006 with a victory over Belgium and lost in the title series to Russia in 2007.

  • Rezai, 22, won her second career WTA singles title, with the other coming back in May in Strasbourg just before the French Open.

The top-seeded Bartoli was up 5-3 in the first set before her countrymate rallied to take the set 7-5. The five-time title winner had her left thigh taped up prior to hitting a double fault that gave her opponent the set, and she retired shortly thereafter.

  • Pennetta secured the first point for the home country with a 6-3, 6-1 rout of Alexa Glatch before Schiavone followed with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 victory over Melanie Oudin.

The Americans, appearing in their first Fed Cup final since 2003, will need to sweep Sunday's reverse singles and take the ensuing doubles match to claim the title. With a team featuring the 132nd-ranked player in the world in Glatch and the 49th-ranked Oudin, an 18th Fed Cup crown -- and first since 2000 -- appears unlikely.

  • The top-seeded Bartoli cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm, while Rezai notched a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.

Bartoli will play in her fourth final of 2009 and will try for her third title of the year. She won previously in Monterrey and Stanford, while losing in her first event of the season at Brisbane back in January.

  • Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Serena Williams set a new single- season record on the WTA Tour by earning more than $6.5 million in prize money this year.

The old record was held by Justine Henin, who earned just under $5.5 million two years ago.

  • The second-seeded Serena notched a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) triumph for her third title of 2009 and the 35th of her brilliant career. Her only other wins this year came at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, but she will finish 2009 as the top-ranked women's player in the world.

It was a perfect week for Serena, who was 3-0 in her round-robin group and beat Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals. Wozniacki, the U.S. Open runner-up from Denmark, retired in the second set on Saturday.
