Blake rolls to semifinals in Houston
Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Top-seeded American James Blake moved into the semifinals, but fellow countryman Mardy Fish was ousted in his quarterfinal match Friday at the $436,000 U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships.
Blake topped fifth-seeded Argentine Agustin Calleri, 6-4, 6-3 at River Oaks Country Club. This is Blake's second career semifinal berth in Houston, as he fell to Argentine Mariano Zabaleta last year.
Fish, the third seed, lost to eighth-seeded Spaniard Oscar Hernandez, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). The world No. 42 Fish was bidding for his second title in Houston, having lifted the trophy in 2006.
Seventh-seeded Spaniard Marcel Granollers-Pujol eased into the quarters with a 6-3, 6-2 pasting of Brazilian Marcos Daniel.
In one other quarterfinal, American Wayne Odesnik saved a match point before overcoming Argentine Sergio Roitman 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in 2 hours, 38 minutes.
Blake will play Hernandez on Saturday, while Granollers-Pujol faces Odesnik.
The 2008 titlist here will pocket $68,800.
