  • Open final, Swiss icon Roger Federer returned to the tennis courts with a first-round victory Monday at his hometown Swiss Indoors tournament.

    The world No. 1 Federer, who once served as a ball boy here, handled Belgian qualifier Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-4 at St. Jakobshalle. The Basel native moved on in 66 minutes with the help of 12 aces and two service breaks.

  • Melzer, the seventh seed, notched a 6-4, 6-3 triumph in the final to become the first Austrian native to win in Vienna since Horst Skoff in 1988. Twice previously, Melzer had lost title matches in Austria, falling to Juan Martin del Potro last year in Kitzbuhel and losing to Nikolay Davydenko in 2005 in St. Poelten.

    "It's always nice winning a tournament, especially winning at home is a great achievement," said Melzer. "After all the pressure, it's just nice to be able to win that final point to win the tournament and I'm really happy about it. It's an unbelievable story to win at home and satisfy the crowd." Sunday's victory gave Melzer just his second career ATP singles title and first since winning in Bucharest three years ago. He has also lost six times in title matches.

  • Petersburg,Russia (Sports Network) - Ukrainian qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky finished off a surprising week with a three-set victory over Argentina's Horacio Zeballos to capture the title at the St. Petersburg Open.

    Stakhovsky became the third qualifier this season to capture an ATP singles crown, rallying for a 2-6, 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (9-7) victory on Sunday. The other qualifiers to win titles this year were Germany's Benjamin Becker in June at 's-Hertogenbosch and Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci in August in Gstaad.

  • The third-seeded Ljubicic posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory on Sunday to claim his ninth career ATP singles title and first in more than two years. The Croatian veteran last won at the Wimbledon tuneup in 's-Hertogenbosch in June of 2007.

    Ljubicic was the only non-French player among the eight quarterfinalists and emerged victorious at a site where he captured his first career ATP crown back in 2001.
