United defender Julius James had shoulder surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder and will be out three to four months.
The defender came to D.C. United on Aug. 14 via trade with the Houston Dynamo. During his first season in D.C., James played in nine MLS matches, including eight starts.
In all competitions, James played in 14 matches, including 13 starts.
In United's final game of the season, an injured James scored his only goal of the campaign off a header.
He was also called up by Trinidad and Tobago late in the season and played 90 minutes in a World Cup qualifying match against Costa Rica.
