  • Revs have shot to clinch playoff berth vs. RSL

Foxborough, MA (Sports Network) - The New England Revolution need a lot of help, but if everything breaks perfectly for them in this weekend's Major League Soccer matches, the team could become the second to clinch a spot in the 2008 MLS Cup playoffs.

On top of having to earn a victory over visiting Real Salt Lake at Gillette Stadium, the Revs need D.C. United to lose or draw against Chivas USA and New York to lose to Toronto FC, all on Saturday.

Easier said than done, especially when considering RSL is fighting for its playoff life, Toronto has been arguably the worst team in the league over the last couple months and United is at home vs. Chivas USA.

The Revs (12-8-6) are coming off a 1-0 loss at Columbus - the only team to clinch its spot in the postseason already - in their last league fixture.

"In the first half and for most of the game, we were just dumb," New England coach Steve Nicol said. "If you look at how they played, especially in the first half, we tried to make passes in the middle of our own half and they just squeezed us. We tried that and it didn't work. We weren't smart enough to change it. We're trying to stretch out the game and get it wider earlier and we couldn't do it." Real (9-10-7), on the other hand, moved back into the playoff picture last weekend with a 3-2 victory at San Jose. The win offset the team's first home loss from the prior week and put it in the final playoff spot - the second wild card.

Yura Movsisyan scored two goals in the game and Javier Morales added a goal and an assist to lead the team to victory.

"Javier Morales has been fantastic," RSL coach Jason Kreis said. "There's certainly been some games where I would have thought he could have done a little bit more, and so he was one of the players I was hoping would accept that challenge and he showed tonight that he did, because I thought he was absolutely fantastic.

He created that first goal, an unbelievable pass, and then played through what was, I'm sure, a painful injury because he knows how important to our team he is. So for me, my hat's off to him. Fantastic.

"I honestly feel that Yura is a player that a lot of people that have been watching him for a while don't quite understand what he's made of, and what he's capable of. The coaching staff that sees him day in and day out has a full understanding of what he's capable of, and he showed it [last weekend]," Kreis added.
