• Huckerby tabbed as MLS Player of the Month for September

  
  

  New York, NY (Sports Network) - San Jose Earthquakes forward Darren Huckerby was voted MLS Player of the Month for September on Wednesday.

  He netted three goals and tallied one assist during the month and led the Earthquakes to a 1-1-1 record, while helping keep alive a nine-game unbeaten streak that lasted until the 'Quakes final game of the month.

  Huckerby scored crucial goals in two of his club's three league matches in September, including the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over a visiting D.C.

  United squad, in which Huckerby assisted on the first goal scored by Arturo Alvarez. The win on Sept. 6 put the 'Quakes unbeaten streak at eight games.

  Huckerby then had a strong performance in San Jose's 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo on Sept.

  13 at Buck Shaw Stadium in which he created several scoring opportunities and helped the team extend its unbeaten run to nine games.

  He saved his best effort for the team's final game of the month, scoring two goals in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Real Salt Lake, which ended the team's unbeaten streak.

  However, Huckerby and the Earthquakes are still in a position to become the first expansion team to make the playoffs in 10 years as they sit five points out of a spot in the playoffs.

  This is Huckerby's first Player of the Month award since joining the Earthquakes in July 2008. He has appeared in and started nine games and has recorded six goals and four assists.

  The Major League Soccer Player of the Month is selected following the last regular season game of each month by a panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (SoccerReporters.com). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
