Reds earn point vs. Dynamo, but it may not be enough
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Toronto FC earned a point at BMO Field against the visiting Houston Dynamo on Saturday afternoon, but it might be too little, too late in the second-year Major League Soccer club's quest for a playoff berth this season.
Even with the draw against the two-time defending champions, TFC still sits in the Eastern Conference basement, four points back of Kansas City, ahead of the Wizards' clash at Chivas USA on Saturday night, with just four games to play.
Houston (10-5-10) also had its chances at earning the Supporters' Shield - given to the league's top team in the regular season - take a hit with the draw. Even though the Dynamo have a comfortable lead in the Western Conference table - now seven points ahead of the Saturday evening fixtures - they are seven points back of the league-leading Columbus Crew.
That number could expand depending on what the Crew do at New England on Saturday.
Saturday's fixture didn't have much action in the first half, aside from Hunter Freeman's own goal that gave the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Houston left winger Brad Davis headed a clearance attempt by TFC goalkeeper Greg Sutton back into the Reds' penalty area before Freeman headed back to his 'keeper. But Sutton was still out so that ball went over his head and into the goal, giving the Dynamo the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
But thanks to a brilliant individual effort by TFC defender Marvell Wynne, it was able to earn a point and keep its almost impossible playoff hopes alive.
With less than 20 minutes to play in the game, Wynne, in his third season in MLS, scored his first professional goal when he controlled the ball in the offensive third and deked around Houston midfielder Dwayne De Rosario. Then, with no defensive cover behind the Canadian international, Wynne took a touch into the box and fired a left-footed shot just under the crossbar and over the hands of Dynamo 'keeper Pat Onstad to tie the game at one.
The Dynamo closed out their September schedule on a four-game unbeaten run ahead of a match at Colorado next Saturday while TFC (7-12-7) is still winless in seven while playing at New York the same day in its next league fixture.
