Schelotto, Rogers lead Crew over Chivas USA
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - The Columbus Crew got no production on the score sheet from two of its best players - Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Robbie Rogers - through the first two games of the Major League Soccer season, but after a goal and two assist performance from Schelotto and a two-goal performance from Rogers on Saturday night, they finally broke out in the third game.
Led by Schelotto and Rogers, the Crew outgunned visiting Chivas USA 4-3 for their second win in three games this season.
Schelotto got things rolling when he scored in the 26th minute, converting a penalty kick after Chivas USA defender Jim Curtin took Alejandro Moreno in the box.
Chivas USA equalized six minutes later when Sacha Kljestan, who moved up top behind lone forward Atiba Harris for the game, blasted a shot home. The U.S. international bent a perfect shot from the top of the penalty area from 20 yards out, just inside the far post and past the diving Will Hesmer in goal.
Schelotto was pivotal in the third goal of the game after he took a pass behind the Chivas USA defense, drove at goal and dished to Moreno for an easy tap-in in the box for the 2-1 lead nine minutes before the first-half break.
Rogers scored his first goal of the season 19 minutes from time to give Columbus a two goal lead, but a minute later Marsch pulled it right back for the visitors.
A little over five minutes later, Goats midfielder Paulo Nagamura took a pass from Kljestan and fired home to tie the game at three.
Then the wheels came off for Chivas USA.
Rogers scored his second goal of the game - and the game winner - in the 82nd minute after he out jumped Eric Ebert on the left win, headed the ball to space behind the defense and fired a shot through Goats 'keeper Brad Guzan. Guzan actually got two hands on the ball he should have done better with.
A minute later, Chivas USA midfielder Francisco Mendoza was given his second caution to earn an ejection before Kljestan was given a straight red a minute after that for a hard foul on Schelotto.
Playing two men down for the closing minutes, Chivas USA had a hard time breaking down the Crew defense and suffered its first loss of the season and first ever to Columbus in its fourth season in MLS.
Chivas USA will be back in action April 20 when it hosts Dallas in a clash of Western powers while the Crew travel to D.C. for a match on Thursday.
