Kariya undergoes successful hip surgery

Kariya, 34, has played in only 11 contests this season, and not since a November 5 game against Anaheim. He has two goals and 15 points this season.

In his 14th NHL season, and second with the Blues, Kariya has scored 384 career goals with 946 points in 914 games with Anaheim, Colorado, Nashville and St. Louis.

Nashville recalls Jones

Jones has appeared in 16 games with the Predators in 2008-09 and owns three goals and three assists. He will be making his third stint with the Predators this season.

In 21 games with the Admirals, Jones has registered 11 goals, six assists and 26 penalty minutes.

Avs again place Foote on IR

Foote, who missed time in late November and early December with upper back and knee injuries, this time is suffering from a triceps problem. The current IR move is retroactive to January 4.

In 30 games this season, Foote has four assists.

Ducks, Kings begin home-and-home in Anaheim

The Ducks are currently second in the division with 45 points, but are just two up on third-place Phoenix. They earned that advantage by downing the Coyotes, 2-0, on Sunday.

Though 18 points back of the first-place San Jose Sharks in the Pacific Division, the Ducks would love to chip away at that gap while leaving the rest of the division's residents behind. Two games against the Kings should help that.

Sharks make a stop in Calgary

The Sharks hit the road after a brief stop at home, where they posted a 5-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday. The contest in San Jose had followed a 1-0-2 road trip. In fact, though they have lost four of their last five on the road, the Sharks still managed points in four of those games (1-1-3) and are 10-4-3 as the road club this season.

In Saturday's home win, Mike Grier scored twice and Jonathan Cheechoo had three assists to help the Sharks extended their home points streak to 30 games. San Jose is 19-0-2 as the host this year and 27-0-3 at home dating back to last season.

Blackhawks, Coyotes meet in the desert

Chicago will likely be without Kane again tonight when it visits the Phoenix Coyotes and Jobing.com Arena seeking a sweep of the four-game season series.

Kane leads the Blackhawks with 41 points this season off 16 goals and 25 assists. However, he missed the first game of his career on Sunday, when he sat out due to a high ankle sprain. Kane, who is day-to-day with his injury, had played in 117 straight contests, including all 82 last year in his rookie campaign.

Avs limp into Nashville

Colorado has lost three straight on the heels of a three-game winning streak and has played the last five games without leading scorer Paul Stastny, who is on injured reserve due to right forearm surgery. That club has already been without Joe Sakic since December due to first a herniated disc in his back and then three broken fingers suffered in a snow blower accident.

Stastny leads Colorado with 21 assists and 31 points in 34 games this year, and he and Sakic combined for 111 points last season.

Lundqvist posts shutout as Rangers paste Penguins

Blue Jackets' Nash named NHL's weekly first star

Defenseman Brian Rafalski of the Detroit Red Wings was named the week's second star, while Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward was honored as the third star.

Nash notched two goals and seven assists last week to help Columbus win three of its four road games. That includes a season-high four points off a goal and three assists in a victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday.

Flames assign Lundmark to Quad City

Lundmark has played just three games with the Flames this season, notching two assists without a goal. In 35 games with Quad City this year, the 27-year-old has 10 goals and 26 assists.

Selected ninth overall by the New York Rangers in 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Lundmark has played for multiple teams during his NHL career, including the Los Angeles Kings and Phoenix Coyotes. He has 27 goals and 46 assists in 235 career NHL contests.

Islanders take 12-game road skid to Edmonton

New York is last in the NHL with 28 points in 40 games this year and has just a 5-15-2 mark as the road team this year. The Islanders haven't won away from Uniondale since a victory in Montreal on November 24.

After going just 2-10-2 in December, the Islanders have dropped their first two tests of January, with both setbacks coming on the road. New York began a four-game swing in Phoenix on Friday with a 5-4 setback before getting handed a 5-3 loss in San Jose on Saturday.

Pens try to halt pair of skids against Rangers at MSG

The Penguins have struggled since a 1-0 victory over New Jersey back on December 26. They fell in defeat at home versus Montreal before getting swept in a home-and-home set by Boston to bridge 2008 and '09. Pittsburgh returned home to host Florida on Saturday, but was routed 6-1.

Ruslan Fedotenko had the lone goal on the day that Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were both named starters for the upcoming All-Star game. Crosby, who is third in the NHL with 50 points, set a record with 1,713,021 votes, surpassing Jaromir Jagr's previous record of 1,020,736 tallies set in 2000.

Anaheim's Hiller blanks Coyotes

Chris Pronger and Bobby Ryan got the goals for Anaheim, both on the power play -- and both their seventh of the season -- as the Ducks won for just the second time in their last seven games.

They did so without the services of the club's second leading scorer in Corey Perry, who was suspended by the league for four games following an elbowing incident in a loss to Philadelphia on Friday.

Blackhawks cool off streaking Flames

Andrew Ladd and Patrick Sharp also recorded a goal and an assist, while Kris Versteeg and Dustin Byfuglien also tallied for Chicago, which has now won 10 of 12 overall. Nikolai Khabibulin made 34 saves in the win for the Blackhawks.

Tampa Bay beats Thrashers in battle for last place

Mike Smith made 27 saves, as the Lightning moved one point ahead of the now- last place Thrashers. Steve Eminger and Ryan Malone also scored for Tampa Bay, which recorded its first win in Atlanta since February 22, 2007 and snapped a three-game losing streak.

"I'd like to think (we've turned the corner)," St. Louis said. "We look on the same page. We get in trouble sometimes when we try to go on our own agenda. If we stay in the team concept, we're a tough team to play against. It just takes one guy on his own program, and it hurts the other four on the ice. Markov sends Habs past Panthers in shootout

After the first five shooters were all stopped, the newly-named All-Star starter Markov slipped a backhand shot through the legs of Florida's Craig Anderson to give Montreal the win.

The Canadiens found out Saturday that they will have four starters in the All- Star Game to be played in Montreal, January 25. In addition to Markov, forward Alex Kovalev, defenseman Mike Komisarek and goalie Carey Price received starting nods Andrei Kostitsyn scored twice, while Francis Bouillon, Tom Kostopoulos and Robert Lang also tallied for the Canadiens, who have won four of their last five.

Blackhawks RW Kane out Sunday vs. red-hot Flames

The Flames have won five in a row and earned at least a point in 10 straight games (7-0-3).

Kane, 20, sprained his ankle Tuesday at Detroit and aggravated the injury during Thursday's Winter Classic against the Red Wings. It will be the first time that the baby-faced sniper misses a game due to injury since being taken first overall by the Blackhawks in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Canucks and Stars clash in Vancouver

With No. 1 netminder Roberto Luongo already out with a strained groin, the Canucks goaltending situation got desperate last Tuesday when Curtis Sanford aggravated a groin ailment of his own. Vancouver was taking on the Flyers and during the game it acquired LaBarbera from the Los Angeles Kings for a 2009 seventh-round draft choice.

LaBarbera started Thursday's victory over Nashville and was back in net on Friday. He ended with 34 stops in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Atlanta Thrashers.

Ducks host Coyotes in Pacific Division clash

The Coyotes and Ducks enter this game with identical 19-15-5 records and 43 points on the season. However, both clubs trail the San Jose Sharks by 20 points for the top spot in the division.

This is the second of six meetings between Phoenix and Anaheim this year. Helped by two goals out of Shane Doan, the Coyotes posted a 4-2 win in Anaheim on October 12 for their seventh win in the last 10 meetings with the Ducks. It was also Phoenix's fourth win in the last five trips to the Honda Center.

Wild begin road trip with stop in Colorado

The Wild are 7-9-0 as the visiting team this year thanks to their lengthy road skid, as they haven't won away from Minnesota since November 29 in Nashville.

The club was home last night to face the Red Wings and managed to force a shootout with Detroit. However, Pavel Datsyuk scored the lone shootout tally and all three Minnesota skaters were stopped in a 3-2 loss to Detroit.

Blackhawks hope to get on track versus Flames

Chicago had plenty of momentum heading into its two-game set with the Detroit Red Wings, but after having a franchise-record nine-game winning streak end with a 4-0 loss in Motown last Tuesday, the Blackhawks dropped a 6-4 test to Detroit in Thursday's New Year's Day clash at Wrigley Field.

Playing outdoors in the stadium that usually houses the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball, Kris Versteeg, Martin Havlat and Ben Eager all scored first- period goals to stake the Blackhawks to an early 3-1 lead, but the Red Wings netted the next five tallies to claim the win.

Devils welcome road-weary Senators to Garden State

Parise is tops on the Devils with 22 goals and 46 points, while his 24 assists are tied with Elias for most on the team. Elias is also second on New Jersey with 41 points.

Thrashers, Lightning tangle in Atlanta

Something will give this evening, as Atlanta hosts Tampa Bay at Philips Arena in a battle between the bottom two clubs of the Southeast Division.

The Thrashers halted a four-game losing streak with Friday's 4-3 shootout win over Vancouver that also ended the club's string of three straight losses at home. Eric Christensen gave Atlanta the win, as he stuffed the puck past the Canucks' Jason LaBarbera in the fourth round of the extra session.

Canadiens shoot for fifth straight win over Panthers

After losing four in a row to the Panthers, the Canadiens have responded with four straight victories, taking the final two meetings last year before a pair of victories this season.

Montreal notched a home win over Florida back on October 20 to halt a three- game home losing streak to the Panthers and then posted a 5-2 victory in Sunrise last Monday in a contest that featured the first hat trick of Maxim Lapierre's career.
