O'Shea headlines CFL honors for opening week

O'Shea tallied five tackles and a sack, moving into second place on the all- time CFL defensive tackles list with 1,088 trailing only Willie Pless' record of 1,241.

Quarterback Anthony Calvillo of the Montreal Alouettes was named the top player on offense.

Last season the Roughriders won their first Grey Cup since 1989, but have undergone a host of changes -- most prominently the departure of head coach Kent Austin and quarterback Kerry Joseph, the CFL's most outstanding player.

Formeroffensive linecoach Ken Miller was promoted to be Austin's replacement, and he got his first win as CFL head coach behind an offense that totaled 377 yards. Crandell, replacing Joseph, threw two interceptions but was effective under center.

Robertson keys Argos to win at Winnipeg

Robertson notched 66 receiving yards on three catches and rushed for 36 yards to make Rich Stubler a winner in his CFL coaching debut. The Argonauts used a dual quarterback threat as newly acquired and reigning CFL Most Outstanding Player Kerry Joseph threw for just 73 yards on 9-of-17 passes. Michael Bishop was more effective, throwing for 111 yards and a touchdown for the victors.

Kevin Glenn threw for 321 yards on 32-of-48 passing, but was intercepted three times in a rare home loss for Winnipeg. Derick Armstrong was the beneficiary of the aerial attack, hauling in seven balls for 116 yards. Charles Roberts accounted for the Bombers' only touchdown while rushing for 76 yards on 13 carries.

Calgary tops BC in season opener

Burris finished 22-of-32 for 274 yards for Calgary, which played its first game under new head coach John Hufnagel. Former coach Tom Higgins was fired after the Stampeders finished 7-10-1 last season. Ken-Yon Rambo caught eight passes for 136 yards and a touchdown while Joffrey Reynolds gained 125 yards on 23 carries in the win.

Buck Pierce started under center and completed 9-of-14 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown for British Columbia, which finished with the best regular- season record in 2007, but lost to Saskatchewan in the playoffs. Calvillo entered the game 205 yards shy of Danny McManus (53,255) and easily passed that mark, moving into sole possession of second place with 53,343 yards. Damon Allen is well ahead in first place, with 72,381 yards.

Kerry Watkins had six catches for 102 yards and two scores for the Alouettes (1-0).

First Blood Part II: Stampeders extend Rambo

In 2007, Rambo set career highs in receptions (62), receiving yards (983) and touchdowns (10) in his third season with the Stampeders.

The Ohio State product signed with Calgary as a free agent in 2005 after four unsuccessful attempts at making an NFL roster.

Blue Bombers release veteran K Westwood

Westwood, 41, holds more than 30 Winnipeg records, including all-time scoring (2,741) and most seasons leading the team in scoring (15). He also holds the CFL record for best career field goal percentage in the playoffs at 85.7 percent.

Originally a sixth round selection from the 1991 Canadian College Draft, Westwood also kicked a league-best 663 consecutive regular season PATs.

Former CFL linebacker Jones passes away at 46

He was 46.

Jones played eight seasons with Winnipeg (1983-1987, 1989-1991), winning Grey Cup titles in 1984 and 1990. He was named Grey Cup MVP in 1984 and CFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1985. Jones holds team records for sacks with 98 and Grey Cup records for sacks in a game (four) and career Grey Cup sacks (five).

Argos bring back Vanderjagt

Vanderjagt helped the Argos to consecutive Grey Cup titles in 1996 and '97, then left for the NFL and spent eight seasons with the Indianapolis Colts before playing part of one year with the Dallas Cowboys.

During his time in the NFL, Vanderjagt established a record by connecting on 86.4 percent of his field goal tries. He was perfect during the 2003 season, drilling each of his 37 field goal attempts and all 46 point-after tries.

Eskimos acquire Prefontaine from Argos

The Argos will receive a first-round pick in the 2009 CFL Canadian Draft and a conditional pick in the 2010 Canadian Draft.

Prefontaine played 10 seasons and 171 regular-season games for the Argonauts from 1998 through 2007. He leaves as the club's second-leading scorer all-time with 935 points and its second-leading punter with 57,246 yards.

Argonauts QB Allen calls it quits

Allen is professional football's all-time leading passer with 72,831 yards, more than 11,000 yards ahead of NFL all-time passing leader Dan Marino. Allen's 11,914 rushing yards place him third on the CFL's the all-time rushing list and just 329 yards behind his brother, Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen's career rushing total.

The 44-year-old Damon Allen is one of the most accomplished players in CFL history, holding all-time regular season records for passing touchdowns (394), pass attempts (9,138), pass completions (5,158) and longest pass completion at 109 yards.

Knee injury sidelines Winnipeg WR Stegall

Stegall had discomfort and irritation in his knee following last season and underwent arthroscopic surgery on May 2.

The team announced it will monitor Stegall's progress, but there is no return date set.

Over the course of 84 games with Hamilton, Radlein, who was taken third overall in the 2003 CFL Canadian Draft, had 144 rushes for 386 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also had 66 receptions for 551 yards and one touchdown.

Barker taken first in Canadian College Draft

Alouettes fined, lose first pick

Due to exceeding the salary cap, which is $4.05 million, by $108,285 last season, the team has been fined $116,570 and have also lost their first-round pick (fourth overall) in the 2008 CFL draft, which is set to take place on Wednesday.

That pick will now go to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at the end of the first round due to that team finishing last season with the fewest amount of wins.

Bombers sign two

Bearman, a former co-captain at New Mexico State, broke into the CFL in 1999 with the B.C.

Lions and played three seasons for the Ottawa Renegades before coming to the Bombers midway through the 2006 season. Bearman played in all 18 regular season games for the Bombers in 2007 finishing third on the team with 15 special teams tackles.

2009 Grey Cup to be played in Calgary

Bradley spent his entire six year pro career with Edmonton, developing into a double threat as both a running back and kick returner.

Originally signed as a free agent in 2002, Brown was a part of two Grey Cup champions with the Eskimos.

Blue Bombers ink QB Glenn to extension

"Kevin Glenn emerged as on of the CFL's elite quarterbacks this past season and we are delighted that he will be a fixture of this team for some time to come," said Winnipeg general manager Brendan Taman.

Glenn led the CFL with 5,114 passing yards, pass completions (388) and pass attempts (621) in 2007. He threw 25 touchdown passes on the year, which saw the Bombers win two playoff games and earn a berth in the Grey Cup final.

BC Lions extend Buono

Buono is entering his sixth season with the Lions and had led the club to five straight playoff appearances, including the Grey Cup in 2006.
