Busch grabs pole for Nationwide race at California
Fontana, CA (Sports Network) - Kyle Busch won the pole for Saturday night's Camping World RV Service 300 at the Auto Club Speedway. The No.18 Toyota driver rounded the two-mile oval in 40.586 seconds (177.401 m.p.h.).
Busch recorded his third Nationwide pole of the season and the 14th of his career.
"Our car has been good since we unloaded it yesterday," Busch said. "We made some minor changes to it. The guys back at the shop really prepared a nice race car here this weekend." Jeff Burton secured the outside pole with a qualifying time of 41.024 seconds.
Joey Logano (41.097) and Carl Edwards (41.104) will start on the second row.
Other drivers of note and their starting positions include Clint Bowyer (10th) and Brad Keselowski (24th).
Keselowski established himself as a serious championship contender last week after picking up his second win of the year at the Bristol Motor Speedway. He moved to within 122 points of Bowyer.
Keselowski is hoping for the best at California, where he has finished 32nd or worse in his first four races there.
He made his Nationwide debut at California two years ago.
Edwards fell to third in the standings -- 241 markers behind Bowyer -- after a 37th-place finish at Bristol.
He has a lot of ground to make up, but California is the place where he can do it. He has one victory and five top-10 finishes in seven Nationwide races there.
Bowyer also has an impressive track record at California with four top-10 finishes in six starts.
His best finish there is third, which came in September 2005.
Tonight's race is scheduled to start around 10:00 p.m. (et).
