Heatseeker scratched from Hollywood Gold Cup
Inglewood, CA (Sports Network) - Morning-line favorite Heatseeker has been scratched from Saturday's running of the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup. The five-year-old exhibited swelling in the left front ankle on Friday morning.
The 7-5 favorite for the 1 1/4 mile Gold Gulp, Heatseeker was discovered to have developed swelling of the left front ankle that will prevent him running on Saturday.
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer indicated that it is not a serious injury and the chestnut horse should resume training shortly.
"I am sorry about it, especially with all the exposure we've gotten, but unfortunately we can't run a horse with a filled ankle and some heat in it," Hollendorfer said. "We deal with these problems on a daily basis, it's unfortunate we have to with a horse like Heatseeker." In a 17 race career the veteran runner has won seven times for nearly $1.8 million.
Owned by William de Burgh, Heatseeker was coming off a win in the Californian at Hollywood Park last month which followed a second place finish to Tiago in the Oaklawn Handicap.
He won the Santa Anita Handicap in March, following a second place finish in the San Antonio Handicap.
