  • War Pass injured, will miss Kentucky Derby

Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - Two-year old champion War Pass has suffered a leg injury and will not run in the $2 million Kentucky Derby on May 3.

War Pass, the winner of the 2007 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, has a small fracture in the sesamoid of his left front ankle, according to trainer Nick Zito. The three-year-old colt will likely be out of action for several months.

The injury may have occurred in the colt's most recent race, a second-place finish in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 5.

Owned by Robert LaPenta, War Pass went undefeated in four races in his 2007 campaign, but has won just once in three starts this year. After winning an allowance race in his 2008 debut, War Pass then flopped with a seventh-place finish in the Tampa Bay Derby before bouncing back with his runner-up finish to Tale of Ekati in the Wood Memorial.

The loss of War Pass does not mean Zito and LaPenta will be without a horse in the Kentucky Derby, as the two also have a contender in Cool Coal Man, winner of Gulfstream Park's Fountain of Youth.

Over his seven race career, War Pass has won five times and has earned nearly $1.6 million.
