NHL

  • The Sharks have won their first three games of the season.

Jason LaBarbera made 18 saves in the home opener for the Kings, but Los Angeles was hurt by missed opportunities and a pair of disallowed goals.

NHL

  • Penner gave Edmonton the lead early in the third in a two-goal performance while Shawn Horcoff notched a first period power-play tally for the Oilers, who got stellar goaltending from Mathieu Garon. The netminder was brilliant in stopping all but two of Colorado's 33 shots.

Joe Sakic lit the lamp in the second and Milan Hejduk tied the game midway through the third on a penalty shot for Colorado, which saw Peter Budaj take the loss in facing 19 shots.

NHL

  • Mikkel Boedker, the eighth overall pick of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, tallied his first career goal in the first period for the Coyotes, winners of their first two games. Kyle Turris, who was the team's first-round pick in 2007, scored the other goal and assisted on another, and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 33- of-35 shots to pick up the win.

Ryan Carter and George Parros each scored for the Ducks, who have dropped their first two games of the season. Chris Pronger tallied an assist, and Jean-Sebastian Giguere allowed four goals on 24 shots in taking the loss in Anaheim's home opener.

NHL

  • The 33-year-old brother of Ducks' captain Scott Niedermayer has one goal in two games this season. Niedermayer is in his 15th NHL season -- sixth with Anaheim -- and recorded eight goals and 16 points in 78 games last season.

NHL

  • Prior to yesterday's 3-1 loss to the Sharks, the 21-year-old Kopitar inked a seven-year contract extension that will keep him with the Kings through the 2015-16 season. It was the second longest extension given in club history, behind only the eight-year deal the franchise gave Wayne Gretzky in 1988.

Kopitar, though, managed just a shot and no points in Saturday's loss. Still, he netted 32 goals to go along with 45 assists in 82 games a year ago, and has seven goals and seven assists in 17 career tests versus the Sharks.

NHL

  • The Ducks posted 102 points last year, but that was only good enough for second behind the San Jose Sharks. Anaheim was then ousted by another division rival, the Dallas Stars, in the first round of the playoffs.

The club began its season on Thursday in San Jose, but was handed a 4-1 setback. Rob Niedermayer scored the lone goal for Anaheim, which looked lethargic next to an energized Sharks attack.

NHL

  • Perhaps the schedule makers thought a few extra days would be beneficial for the Oilers, who saw veterans Shawn Horcoff, Sheldon Souray, captain Ethan Moreau and Fernando Pisani all miss significant time last year due to injury.

However, with so many vets sidelined, Edmonton's young flyers emerged on to the scene. Sam Gagner (19 years old), Kyle Brodziak (24), Tom Gilbert (25) and Andrew Cogliano (21) all made significant contributions in helping keep the Oilers in the playoff hunt until the final days of the season.

NHL

  • Daniel Sedin had a pair of goals and his brother Henrik set up both for Vancouver, which wiped out an early 3-1 deficit with second period goals from Ryan Kesler and Rick Rypien. Roberto Luongo stopped 25-of-29 shots to get the win.

"It was a good come from behind win," Rypien said. "It shows how much guys want to win. Everybody stepped up into their roles.

NHL

  • With time ticking away in the extra session, Devils forward Travis Zajac sent a long lead pass from his own zone to Parise on the left wing. He took the puck one stride over the blue line and let a wrister go from the left circle which hit the net where the right post meets the crossbar.

Patrik Elias was credited with the other goal for the Devils, who have won their first two regular-season contests.

NHL

  • Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Eric Belanger scored twice to lead Minnesota over Boston, 4-3, at Xcel Energy Center.

Marc-Andre Bergeron and Antti Miettinen also scored for the Wild, who withstood a brief Boston rally in the third period to come away with the victory in their season opener.

NHL

  • Ellis, who played one game with Dallas in 2003-04, stopped 19-of-20 shots to pick up the victory for Nashville, which bounced back after dropping a 5-2 decision to St. Louis in its season-opener.

Shea Weber also scored for the hosts, while J.P. Dumont registered an assist on all three tallies.

NHL

  • With time winding down in the extra session, a turnover in the Carolina end resulted in Ray Whitney grabbing the puck and skating down the other end on a 2-on-1 break.

On the fly, Whitney faked a shot from the top of the right circle and fed the puck to Staal, who shot it into the virtually empty net for the win.

  • With time winding down in the extra session, a centering pass in the Atlanta end was deflected by a Thrashers skate. The puck was redirected toward the goal and Kari Lehtonen was in position to make an easy save, but couldn't hang onto the disc with his glove.

Instead, the puck slid in front of the crease and Booth came crashing in to push the puck into an open net for the win.

NHL

  • With regular netminder Rick DiPietro on the bench nursing his surgically repaired hip, MacDonald saved 24-of-26 shots to pick up the win for New York, which dropped its season opener to the Devils on Friday.

Mike Comrie, Trent Hunter, Sean Bergenheim and Andy Hilbert scored in the first period for the Isles.

NHL

  • Alexander Ovechkin, last season's goal-scoring leader and reigning MVP, scored twice while Matt Bradley also lit the lamp for the Capitals, who dropped their season opener to Atlanta on Friday.

Jose Theodore bounced back from a rough season-opener and made 19 saves for Washington, which had dropped three straight to Chicago.

NHL

  • McCabe suffered the injury in Florida's 6-4 season-opening loss to Carolina on Friday, after taking a hit along the boards in the second period. The exam ruled out much more serious conditions like fractured vertebrae, and McCabe is listed as day-to-day.

NHL

  • Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Kopitar, who had one year remaining on his current deal, is entering his third NHL season, all with the Kings. He has 52 goals and 86 assists for 138 points in 154 games.

NHL

  • For the Bruins it will be their second game of the year after posting a road victory at Colorado on Thursday. David Krejci's even-strength marker late in the third period proved to be the game-winner, as Boston notched the 5-4 victory at the Pepsi Center.

Marc Savard registered a goal and an assist for Boston, which proved many prognosticators wrong last season by securing the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference -- its first postseason appearance since 2004 -- and pushing the top-seeded Montreal Canadiens to a decisive seventh game in the opening round.

NHL

  • San Jose, meanwhile, had its season opener on Thursday night and posted a 4-1 victory over the visiting Anaheim Ducks. Jonathan Cheechoo scored a pair of goals to help lift the Sharks.

Christian Ehrhoff and Devin Setoguchi also scored for the Sharks, who got a win for new head coach Todd McLellan in his regular-season debut behind the bench. Milan Michalek and Rob Blake registered a pair of assists apiece.

NHL

  • Entering his fourth season as head coach of Phoenix, Gretzky will try to guide his club to a home-opening win tonight versus the Columbus Blue Jackets at Jobing.com Arena.

Gretzky has a 107-122-17 mark as head coach of Phoenix, but his club is coming off an 83-point season last year, its best with the "Great One" on the bench. Also, the club seems to have to the tools this year to reach the postseason.

NHL

  • The clubs opened their season against each other Thursday evening in Vancouver and the Canucks pounded the Flames by a 6-0 count. Alex Burrows scored a pair of goals and Roberto Luongo stopped all 25 shots he saw, as Vancouver rolled to the easy victory.

Mattias Ohlund notched a goal and assist, while Daniel Sedin added three helpers for the Canucks, who finished last in the Northwest Division last season with a 39-33-10 record and missed the playoffs.

NHL

  • Dallas began its season at home on Friday, and after erasing a two-goal deficit in the third period, fell in defeat, 5-4, in overtime to Columbus.

Brad Richards and Trevor Daley each scored in the third to force extra time, but goaltender Marty Turco couldn't handle Rick Nash's wrister from between the circles with 21 seconds remaining in overtime.
