BU tops BC to win Beanpot
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Brian McGuirk's goal 5:06 into overtime carried Boston University to its third consecutive Beanpot title with a 2-1 triumph over Boston College.
The Terriers won the faceoff in the right circle and McGuirk quickly got to the disc before snapping a quick shot. The puck deflected off the stick of a Boston College player's stick and beat goaltender Cory Schneider high.
It was McGuirk's first goal in 26 games this season.
Chris Higgins scored in the opening period for the Terriers, who won the tournament for a third straight year.
Entering Monday's final, no goaltender in the 55-year history of the tournament had ever recorded consecutive shutouts. The goaltending mark belongs to Boston University's Rick DiPietro, who saved 52 of 53 shots against, and just one goal over two games, as the Terriers claimed the title in 2000.
John Curry had saved his first 50 shots of the tournament before allowing Nathan Gerbe's goal at 2:11 of the third period on a backhander in front. The BC goal also snapped Curry's shutout streak in Beanpot action at 116 minutes and 16 seconds dating back to last year's tournament.
Curry barely stopped the puck after a shot from the right side behind the net with 9.3 seconds left in regulation, narrowly keeping it from sneaking inside the right post.
"I can't say enough about John Curry and I can't say enough about my team's willingness to hang in there and bend but not break," BU coach Jack Parker said. "It was like the Battle of the Bulge. We were bending pretty good there for a while. You have to give John Curry credit for this one, he kind of stole it."
Curry finished with 37 saves, while Schneider had 24 stops.
"I thought our team played very well and with a lot of heart," BC coach Jerry York said. "We executed and produced a lot of scoring chances on John Curry. It was an unfortunate bounce at the end. It was a face-off play. It was just a scrum in front, a guy whacked at it with his stick and it went straight up into the net."
BU was in the final for a 13th straight year and for the 23rd time in the last 24 years. The Terriers have won the championship 28 times.
Curry was named the tournament MVP, ending with a .985 save percentage in the two games.
This was the 19th time in the 55-year history of the championship that BU and BC faced off in the title game, with Boston University holding a 12-7 advantage. It was also be the fourth time in five years the two schools faced off in the final.
Northeastern beat Harvard 3-1 in Monday's consolation game.
