• Lucia inks contract extension with Minnesota

  
  

  Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - The University of Minnesota signed men's ice hockey coach Don Lucia to a three-year contract extension on Tuesday.

  The 47-year-old Lucia is currently in his seventh season at the helm of the powerful Golden Gopher program, which has reached the Frozen Four in three of the last four seasons, including NCAA titles in 2002 and 2003.

  Originally, Lucia was under contract for the next three seasons, but will now lead Minnesota through the 2011-2012 campaign.

  "We wanted to make sure that Don Lucia remained at Minnesota," said director of athletics Joel Maturi. "With the success he has brought to the men's hockey program, we are fortunate to have Don at the helm."

  The Golden Gophers are currently 11-1-2 this season and sit in second place in the WCHA with a 6-2-2 conference mark.
