  • Medalists Overton, Goydos, will make first Open appearances

Dearborn, MI (Sports Network) - Jeff Overton fired a 14-under 130 at the TPC at Michigan while Paul Goydos shot a 13-under 131 at Dearborn Country Club, as both earned medalist honors in Monday's British Open International Qualifying.

Overton had 12 birdies, an eagle and no bogeys en route to rounds of 63 and 67 as both he and Goydos will make their first appearances in the Open Championship.

Goydos, who lost a playoff to Sergio Garcia at The Players Championship in May, edged Michael Letzig and Doug LaBelle II by two and three shots, respectively.

Also at Dearborn CC, where all seven qualifiers were Americans, Davis Love III, Rich Beem, Kevin Stadler and Craig Barlow all advanced in a five-for-four playoff ahead of Iain Steel from Malaysia. The five players were tied at nine- under 135 after 36 holes. Love, the 1997 PGA Championship winner, will be making his 22nd consecutive appearance in the Open while Beem, the only other major winner to qualify, won the 2002 PGA by one shot over Tiger Woods.

Jesper Parnevik, who finished as a runner-up at the Open in 1994 and 1997, was among those who failed to qualify.

Seven spots were also available at the TPC at Michigan where John Rollins finished at eight-under followed by Tim Petrovic and Matt Kuchar at seven- under to join Overton in the top five. German Alex Cejka, the only non- American qualifier at the site, also finished at seven-under.

Scott McCarron finished alone in sixth with a 138 and Thomas Gillis won a five-for-one playoff between players who shot 139.

Tom Pernice, Jr., Fredrik Jacobsen, Shane Bertsch and amateur Danny Lee were edged by Gillis in sudden death.

Other non-qualifiers included Steve Elkington, who lost a four-way playoff to Ernie Els for the 2002 Open Championship.

This was final qualifying for the British Open Championship field in two weeks at Royal Birkdale in England. Padraig Harrington will defend his title after winning in a playoff against Garcia last year.

In qualifying at Sunningdale Club in England earlier on Monday, Simon Wakefield and Ariel Canete shared medalist honors at seven-under 133.

Johan Edfors, Jean-Baptiste Gonnet, Ross Fisher and Gregory Bourdy made it into the field at minus-six.

Paul Waring, Thomas Aiken, Alexander Noren, Pelle Edberg, Anthony Wall, Jose- Felipe Lima, David Horsey, Martin Wiegele, Phillip Archer and Steve Webster qualified at five-under 135.

There was a six-man playoff among those at minus-four for the final two spots, which went to Peter Baker and Simon Dyson.

Two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal, Chris Rodgers, Alastair Forsyth and Ross McGowan lost in the sudden-death playoff.

Among the notable players who also missed out in England were Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke.
