  • Glover leads Weekley by one in Hilton Head

Hilton Head Island, SC (Sports Network) - Lucas Glover posted his second consecutive five-under 66 on Friday to take the second-round lead of the Heritage.

Glover finished two rounds at 10-under 132 and is one clear of defending champion Boo Weekley, who fired a 64 in the second round at Harbour Town Golf Links.

Anthony Kim carded his second 67 in as many days and is alone in third place at minus-eight.

Two-time winner Stewart Cink (68), Cliff Kresge (66) and Stephen Ames (64) share fourth place at seven-under-par 135.

Glover started his second round on the 10th and did not get off to a great start. He bogeyed No. 10, then parred his next four holes. Glover got his round going at the par-five 15th. He briefly considered laying up, but hit a five-wood onto the green and two-putted for his first birdie of the second round.

Two holes later, Glover hit a six-iron to 15 feet at 17 and cashed in on the birdie opportunity. He parred No. 18, but his play early on his second nine that got him into first place.

On the first hole, Glover hit a three-wood off the tee, then hit a pitching- wedge to three feet. He tapped in the birdie effort and made it two in a row with a birdie at two, although it was unexpected.

Glover's three-iron second shot nearly went out of bounds on the left side. He flopped his third shot to four feet and sank the birdie putt to reach eight- under par for the championship.

Glover's ascent to the top continued at the par-three fourth. He played a six- iron to six feet and converted the birdie effort to get to minus-nine.

He parred his next four holes to stay even with Weekley atop the leaderboard. Glover hit a five-iron off the tee at nine, a short par four, then played a gap-wedge inside a foot. He tapped in for the 36-hole lead, his first since the Arnold Palmer Invitational two years ago.

"Obviously a good score, but pretty slow start," said Glover, who shared the opening-round lead on Thursday. "Knocked it on in two on 15 and I think that kind of got things going. It was the first real good swing of the day I made. And after that pretty solid. Squirrelly tee shots and got some good breaks."

Glover has only one victory to his name on the PGA Tour and that came at Disney World in 2005. He received a captain's pick from Jack Nicklaus last year to be on the Presidents Cup team and that has him motivated for this fall's Ryder Cup.

"Right now I'm trying to work my way into being able to think about it and get nervous about it," said Glover, who has a lot of work ahead of him, currently sitting 46th on the U.S. Ryder Cup points list. "But you know how much I enjoyed last year. And I like those every year as a goal on my schedule, maybe a No. 1 goal."

Weekley was flawless on Friday. He collected four birdies through his first 13 holes, then shot up the leaderboard.

At the par-three 14th, the defending champion rolled in a 12-footer for birdie. He made it two in a row at the par-five 15th after he got up and down from a bunker. Weekley got his third consecutive birdie after an eight-footer at 16.

"I hit the ball real well with my irons today," said Weekley, who chipped in twice in his final round last year to secure the win. "Struggled a little bit off the tee. For some reason I just ain't got a clue which way it's going. Today I got lucky and hit some decent drives, kept it in play, on some of the holes where you need to."

Jim Furyk (68), Jay Williamson (69), Jason Bohn (66), Jonathan Byrd (67), Aaron Baddeley (67), Marc Turnesa (67) and Robert Allenby (66) are tied for seventh at six-under 136.

Glover's fellow first round co-leaders, 2002 winner Justin Leonard and five- time champion Davis Love III, only managed even-par 72s on Friday and fell into a group tied for 14th at minus-five.

The 36-hole cut fell at one-over 143 and American Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger (144), last year's Masters champion Zach Johnson (146) and world No. 3 Ernie Els (148) all missed the weekend.
