Ochoa jumps into McDonald's lead
Havre de Grace, MD (Sports Network) - Lorena Ochoa has won the last two majors on the LPGA Tour and Friday she moved into position to make it three straight.
Ochoa fired a seven-under 65 to move to 10-under-par 134 and into the top spot on the leaderboard after two rounds of the McDonald's LPGA Championship.
The Mexican star collected her first major crown last year at the Women's British Open, then rolled to a five-shot win earlier this season at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
"I don't think you can ever get too comfortable," said Ochoa. "You always need to just be aware and be careful, and really try to be smart out there. It's all about having experience." Ochoa leads by one stroke, but is on a roll when holding at least a piece of the 36-hole lead. She has won five straight 72-hole events when leading at the halfway point and seven consecutive overall with the 36-hole lead.
Lindsey Wright carded a four-under 68 Friday to move into second place by herself at minus-nine.
Lorie Kane, who shared the lead after the opening round with Emily Bastel, posted a two-under 70 in round two. Kane is alone in third at eight-under 136. Meanwhile, Bastel plummeted into a share of 31st at minus-two after a four- over 76 on Friday.
Ji Young Oh (68), Brittany Lang (67) and Rachel Hetherington (69) share fourth place at minus-seven.
Three-time winner Annika Sorenstam is one of four players tied for seventh at minus-six after a second-round 68.
"I think I'm in good shape," Sorenstam stated. "I played well here in the past.
You know it's a major and really two days or actually 36 holes is nothing.
The way I'm hitting I'm just waiting for the putts to drop. It could be a lot of fun." Ochoa got her round going with a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-three third, then made it two in a row with a tap-in birdie on the fourth. She birdied both of those holes in round one as well.
The women's world No. 1 parred the next three, then birdied the eighth for the second day in a row. This time, she chipped to three feet and rolled the birdie putt in to move to minus-six.
Ochoa nearly holed her approach at the par-four 10th, but settled for a kick- in birdie. She ran off four straight pars from the 11th at Bulle Rock.
A two-putt birdie on the 15th moved Ochoa to minus-eight, and she came right back with a three-foot birdie putt at 16. Ochoa closed her round by making birdie on No. 18 for the second straight day. Friday, she capped her round by draining a 20-foot putt.
"It was a great day.
It was just easy. One of those days that I hit a lot of fairways," admitted Ochoa.
"I think I gave myself like 17 birdie chances. It was very easy. I did enjoy it a lot. I'm going to try to do that for two more rounds." Wright teed off 11 minutes after Ochoa, but played the back nine first. She posted birdies on 11, 16 and 18 to make the turn at minus-eight.
On the front side, Wright wrapped bogeys at three and five around a birdie on the fourth. She returned to minus-eight with a birdie at the seventh. Wright closed her round with a birdie on the ninth to end one behind Ochoa.
"Just letting it sink in really, but pretty excited -- it's great," Wright exclaimed.
"Great first two days and kind of nice to come into the weekend in this position, especially when Lorena is leading the tournament." Sorenstam was joined in seventh place by Michelle Ellis (67), Marisa Baena (70) and Jin Joo Hong (70).
Defending champion Suzann Pettersen (68) is one of seven players one shot further back at five-under-par 139.
The cut line fell at even-par 144 with 82 players moving on to the weekend. Among those missing the cut were Christina Kim (145), Natalie Gulbis (145), Ai Miyazato (146) and Laura Davies (149).
