Bean holds off Roberts to win Regions Charity
Hoover, AL (Sports Network) - Andy Bean held off a late rally by Loren Roberts on Sunday to win the Regions Charity Classic.
Bean closed with a two-under 70 to finish his second Champion Tour win at 13- under-par 203. He has won two of the four events in which he held at least a piece of the 36-hole lead.
"That one was about as good as I've hit it all day, all week, all year," exclaimed Bean, who earned $255,000 for the win.
Roberts ran off three straight birdies from the 14th to get within one of the lead, but he parred the final three to end one back. Roberts closed with a three-under 69 to finish alone in second at minus-12.
Jeff Sluman closed with the low round of the day, an eight-under 64, to take third at 11-under-par 205.
Monday-qualifier Mike Goodes managed an even-par 72 to grab fourth at minus-10 at the Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa.
Bean moved to 12-under with a birdie on the third.
After parring the next three holes, he stumbled to a bogey on the seventh to drop into a share of the lead at minus-11. He was joined there by Sluman and Roberts.
The 55-year-old Bean pulled away from there.
He dropped in back-to-back birdies from the par-four eighth to take a two-shot lead over Sluman.
After three straight pars, Bean pushed his lead to three shots as he birdied the par-five 13th. He missed the green at the next and that led to his second bogey of the round.
As Roberts closed within one, Bean responded with a two-putt birdie on the par-five 16th to again take a two-shot lead. He made things interesting as he bogeyed the 17th, but a steady two-putt par at the last secured the win.
"This week, I was really just very calm," Bean stated. "I never really got excited about anything and just kept plugging along." Roberts birdied two of his first three holes, but gave those shots back as he bogeyed nine and 11.
Trailing by four, Roberts ran off three straight birdies from the 14th to get within one. However, he parred the last two holes to end there.
Sluman birdied eight of the first 10 holes, including six straight from the fifth, to fly up the leaderboard. After a bogey on 11, he birdied the 13th to briefly gain a share of the lead. Sluman parred out though to end in third.
Lonnie Nielsen closed with a four-under 68 to share fifth place with Bernhard Langer (69) and Denis Watson (72) at nine-under-par 207. R.W. Eaks, Walter Hall and Tom Jenkins were one shot back at minus-eight.
