Watson, North stretch lead to four at Legends
Savannah, GA (Sports Network) - Tom Watson and Andy North followed their stellar opening round with a 10-under 62 Saturday to push their lead to four strokes after two rounds of the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.
Watson and North matched the 36-hole scoring record with their total of 23- under-par 121. Charles Coody and Dale Douglass set the record of 121 in 1990.
This event had been an individual stroke-play event the last six years, but returned to its roots as a team event this year at the Westin Savannah Harbor Resort and Spa. The 32 teams are playing a two-man, better-ball event.
There was a two-hour weather delay on Saturday, but play finished on time.
Two teams -- Brad Bryant and Lonnie Nielsen (60) and Jeff Sluman and Craig Stadler (63) -- share second place at 19-under-par 125. David Edwards and Bernhard Langer are one stroke back at minus-18 after firing an 11-under 61 in the second round.
Watson and North had fallen out of the lead as Bryant and Nielsen birdied 11 of their first 13 holes to fly into the lead at 17-under.
The first-round leaders got off to a steady start with birdies on one and four. North sank a 12-footer for birdie at the par-five seventh.
North kicked in a three-footer for birdie on nine to move them to 17-under. Watson two-putted for birdie on the par-five 11th and a North 15-foot birdie putt at 12 gave them the lead back at minus-19.
On the 13th, North rolled in a seven-footer for birdie. Watson followed with a chip-in birdie on 14 to push them to 21-under.
They extended their lead to four down the stretch with birdies on 16 and 18.
"We played very equally today. We contributed very equally, and it was a day that you'd like to have out here," said Watson. "A few times, the first guy that putted made it. That's the type of position you want to put yourself in." "Today was a whole lot different from yesterday," North stated. "Tom made a couple birdies early, and I wasn't much help for six or seven holes and we both had our chances. Earlier on, I didn't give Tom much help as far as giving a second chance, but then we did a good job of keeping both balls on the green." Bryant and Nielsen played the back nine first and birdied eight of their first nine holes. The lone par came on the par-five 13th.
Around the turn, they birdied one, two and four to get to 18-under. They settled in with four consecutive pars before a birdie at the last gave them a share of second.
Sluman and Stadler did their damage in the middle of the round. They parred the first three holes and followed that with four straight birdies.
Around the turn, they birdied No. 10 and came back with an eagle on the 11th to move to 17-under. Birdies on 13 and 15 put them at 19-under.
There is a five-way tie for fifth at 17-under-par 127.
Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam fired a nine-under 63 to end alongside Andy Bean and Jerry Pate and Larry Nelson and Jim Thorpe, as both those teams carded 64s. Also at minus-17 are Keith Fergus and Wayne Levi as well as John Cook and Joey Sindelar as both those teams posted 65s in round two.
