Schwieger and Legette highlight national players of the week
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Running back Nick Schwieger of Dartmouth, cornerback Chaz Legette of Wagner, cornerback Korey Lindsey of Southern Illinois and receiver-returnman Lorenzo Ricks of Eastern Illinois have been named The Sports Network's FCS national players of the week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Nick Schwieger, Dartmouth, Sophomore, 5-11, 195, Running Back, Norton, MA.
Schwieger set a school record with 242 yards rushing to lift Dartmouth to a 28-6 home victory over Columbia on Saturday. The win snapped the second- longest active losing streak in FCS at 17 games. Schwieger had 69 yards in the first quarter to set up two Big Green touchdowns, then rambled 66 yards in the fourth quarter for a score that clinched the win. He also had runs of 25 and 35 yards during the game as he broke the school record of 229 yards rushing, set by Al Rosier in 1991. Schwieger's performance was just the sixth 200-yard rushing game in Dartmouth history.
DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Chaz Legette, Wagner, Junior, 6-1, 180, Cornerback, Syracuse, N.Y.
Legette picked off two passes, one which he returned 21 yards for the game- deciding touchdown as Wagner beat Sacred Heart 49-28 at home on Saturday. His interception of All-NEC quarterback Dale Fink and touchdown broke a 28-all tie in the final seconds of the third period. Legette also added four solo tackles and one assist and a pass break-up in the red zone that prevented the Pioneers from a TD on a third-and-five play in the second quarter.
Korey Lindsey, Southern Illinois, Junior, 6-0, 190, CB, Baton Rouge, LA.
Lindsey came through with a game-high 12 tackles and two interceptions and combined with another player on a sack as Southern Illinois defeated Youngstown State 27-8 at home on Saturday. Lindsey helped thwart YSU's comeback efforts with two interceptions in the final five minutes. The All- American also teamed with Dolapo Adubifa for a 17-yard sack with the Penguins threatening at the Saluki two-yard line in the fourth quarter.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK Lorenzo Ricks, Eastern Illinois, Soph., 6-1 178, WR/KR, Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
Ricks sparked Eastern Illinois to a 28-20 victory over No. 13 Jacksonville State Saturday on the road, returning a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown and blocking a punt to set up another Panther score. Ricks had 165 all-purpose yards, 124 yards on two kickoff returns, 26 on one punt return and 15 yards on one reception. Ricks broke loose for his touchdown with 6:17 left in the third quarter to give EIU a 28-13 lead. Ricks blocked a punt early in the second quarter that was recovered on the four-yard line to set up a touchdown that gave the Panthers an early 14-0 advantage. Ricks also forced a fumble on punt coverage with 5:30 left in the fourth quarter to provide Eastern Illinois with a late turnover.
