James Madison rolls into No. 1 spot in poll
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - James Madison survived a challenge from Maine for a 24-10 victory on Saturday evening and moved into the top spot of The Sports Network poll on Monday.
The Dukes, who were second last week after their 35-32 victory over previous- No.
1 ranked Appalachian State, received 84 of 105 first-place votes to bump Richmond out of the No. 1 slot the Spiders held for just one week.
Richmond tumbled to No.6 after losing 26-20 to Villanova on Saturday afternoon.
Villanova used its first win ever over a No. 1 team to vault from No. 19 to No. 14.
Appalachian State, the three-time defending national champion and the top team in the Sports Network poll until last week, rose back to No. 2 with a 48-14 victory over Presbyterian.
Montana, which held off Division II Central Washington 38-35 with a 42-yard field goal with one second left, earned 16 first-place votes and climbed one spot to third.
McNeese State jumped from sixth to fourth and received one first-place vote after destroying Southern Virginia 63-7.
New Hampshire and Furman were the only other teams to receive first-place votes.
The Wildcats, who received three first-place votes, rose from seventh to fifth after defeating Dartmouth 42-6.
Furman moved one spot from 16th to 15th and claimed one first-place ballot after a 35-10 win over Chattanooga.
Elon trickled up from eighth to seventh with a 23-17 victory over Samford and Cal Poly moved from ninth to eighth in an off-week.
Wofford scored a 38-37 victory in overtime at then-24th-ranked Georgia Southern and was rewarded with a rise of five places to ninth in the poll.
Northern Iowa dropped a 27-24 game to Southern Illinois and fell from fifth to 10th.
Southern Illinois jumped two spots from 15th to 13th with the victory over its Missouri Valley Football Conference rival.
Eastern Washington stayed at No. 11 after beating Idaho State 45-31 to head up the next 10. The Citadel moved a spot to No. 12, Delaware at No. 16, North Dakota State at No.
17, Massachusetts at No. 18, Central Arkansas at No.
19 and Liberty at No.
20 finished out the top 20 teams.
Three new teams climbed into the poll in the final five positions, No. 22 Jacksonville State, No. 24 Northern Arizona and No. 25 Brown. Western Illinois moved one place to 21 and South Dakota State fell three spots to No. 23 to complete the poll.
The Sports Network will release a final top-25 poll following the national championship game, which will be held December 19 in Chattanooga, TN.
