    • Kansas coach Mangino under internal review

Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) - University of Kansas head football coach Mark Mangino is the subject of an internal review relating to a personnel matter, Jayhawks athletic director Lew Perkins confirmed Tuesday.

In a story first reported by KUsports.com and later confirmed by the Lawrence Journal-World, Perkins held a private meeting with the team Monday evening in which he disclosed Mangino was to be the subject of an internal review.

While the nature of the concerns remain undisclosed, Perkins confirmed Tuesday in a statement that a review is underway.

"I can confirm that an internal review is underway. This review involves a personnel matter and as a result is confidential. It would be inappropriate for me to provide further information at this time," Perkins said.

Mangino held his weekly press conference on Tuesday and acknowledged speaking with Perkins after the meeting but declined to elaborate on what was said.

"I had a brief meeting with him. If you want to know what was said, I'm not disclosing it. He's disclosing information about the situation, I'm not," stated Mangino, who added that the meeting lasted 10 to 15 minutes.

"I don't really have much to say about it other than when you lose a few games in a row, those type of things surface. Those type of issues come up. It's not uncommon," Mangino went on to say. "I don't take it lightly, but I'm focused on Texas and I'm very comfortable with the way we manage and run the football program here.

I haven't lost the team -- not one bit. I may have lost some people around here, but it's not the players." The Lawrence Journal-World also reported Tuesday that senior linebacker Arist Wright was the player who first went to Perkins with unspecified concerns about the coach.

Senior quarterback Todd Reesing was quoted in the paper as saying Perkins informed the team that the investigation would come from an outside entity to produce an "unbiased" result.

In July 2008, Mangino signed a contract extension that runs through the 2012 season and raised his annual salary to $2.3 million. Two years removed from being named consensus national coach of the year in 2007, Mangino's Jayhawks are suffering through a disappointing 5-5 season -- including a 1-5 mark in Big 12 play.

Now in his eighth season guiding Kansas, Mangino is responsible for turning around a program that has been to four bowl games in a six-year span, including its first ever BCS bowl win against Virginia Tech at the 2008 Orange Bowl to cap a 12-1 season.
