O'Shea headlines CFL honors for opening week
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Toronto Argonauts linebacker Mike O'Shea was named Canadian Player of the Week for his performance in a 23-16 victory over Winnipeg in the season's first week.
O'Shea tallied five tackles and a sack, moving into second place on the all- time CFL defensive tackles list with 1,088 trailing only Willie Pless' record of 1,241.
Quarterback Anthony Calvillo of the Montreal Alouettes was named the top player on offense.
He completed 25 of 37 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions in a 33-10 win over the Hamilton Tiger- Cats. Calvillo also ran the ball five times for 23 yards.
Calvillo now trails only Danny McManus (53,255) on the all-time CFL passing list.
The Argonauts also produced the defensive player of the week in defensive back Willie Middlebrooks. In his first CFL game, Middlebrooks had a game-high nine tackles to go with a victory-sealing interception in edging Winnipeg.
Rounding out the players of the week was veteran Als kicker/punter Damon Duval. He made all three of his extra point attempts and all four of his field goal tries, the longest of which measured 39 yards. Duval also booted five punts with a long of 64 yards.
