Tennessee head coach Summitt undergoes shoulder surgery
Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) - Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt underwent shoulder surgery on Thursday, correcting an injury she suffered while chasing a raccoon off the deck of her home.
"Pat is doing well," said Jenny Moshak, Tennessee's associate athletics directorforsports medicine.
Moshak saidthat Summitt will begin rehabilitation on the shoulder in about a week.
Summitt, who is beginning her 35th season at Tennessee, is the winningest coach in NCAA basketball history with a 983-182 overall record. She dislocated her shoulder on March 5 in attempt to prevent a raccoon from attacking her yellow Labrador Retrievers.
The injury didn't slow down Summitt or her Lady Vols in March, as they won a 13th SEC Tournament title on the way to their second NCAA championship in a row, the eighth for Tennessee under Summitt.
Practice for the Lady Vols starts on October 17, and they open the 2008-09 season at home against the University of San Francisco on November 15.
