Marist names Martin head coach
Poughkeepsie, NY (Sports Network) - Marist College has tabbed Chuck Martin as its next men's head basketball coach, the school announced Thursday.
Martin was signed to a contract through the 2013-14 season.
"I am pleased to welcome Chuck and his family to Marist College," said Marist athletic director Tim Murray. "Chuck has worked hard over the past 15 years coaching and building strong relationships in the basketball community. Chuck has coached at five Division I programs and I'm confident he will use his relationships and experience to continue to build our basketball program."
A native of the Bronx, Martin spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach under John Calipari at Memphis. This past season, the Tigers reached the national championship game and established a single-season Division I record with 38 wins. Over his two years, the Tigers posted a 71-6 record and won a pair of Conference USA championships.
"I'd like to welcome Chuck and his family not only to Marist, but to Dutchess County," said Memphis president Dennis Murray. ""I think they'll find that this is a great community to live in, raise a family and build a basketball program. We have a great college campus, terrific fans and the best band in the area. He's inheriting the foundation for a good program, and we're looking forward to seeing him building on this."
Prior to taking the job at Memphis, Martin served as an assistant at St. John's, Drexel, Massachusetts and Manhattan.
"Tim Murray and the search committee were convinced that Chuck Martin would embrace the Marist values and embrace the highest academic standards of the college," Dennis Murray said. "That was an important consideration in choosing him. We look forward to him being the coach at Marist for many years to come."
Marist fished last season 18-14 and posted an 11-7 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference mark under former coach Matt Brady, who left in March to take the top job at James Madison.
