Mariners wrap set with Blue Jays
(Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners will try to win their third straight series when they wrap up a three-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays this evening at Safeco Field.
Seattle has won four of five and six of its last eight games, including Tuesday's 7-6 victory over the Jays in the second test of this series. Willie Bloomquist was the hero with the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, as the Mariners rebounded from a 2-0 loss in the series opener.
Adrian Beltre finished 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Richie Sexson also homered for the Mariners, who are 1-1 on a seven-game homestand and 16-25 in the Emerald City this season. Yuniesky Betancourt added a pair of RBI in the win and starter Ryan Rowland-Smith surrendered three runs on four hits in just 3 2/3 innings. Brandon Morrow earned the win in relief with a scoreless ninth.
The Mariners will try to stay on the right path when struggling veteran Jarrod Washburn gets the nod on Wednesday. Washburn is 3-7 with a 5.23 earned run average in 16 games (15 starts) this season.
Washburn, who has a 2.13 ERA in his last four starts, posted his first win since May 5 the last time out, a 5-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on June 27 at Petco Park. He yielded a pair of runs on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings.
The southpaw, who is 1-3 in six home starts in 2008, is 2-7 with a 4.78 ERA in 10 career starts against the Blue Jays.
Toronto had its three-game winning streak come to an end with last night's setback, falling to 1-1 on a six-game road trip and 19-25 away from Rogers Centre in 2008. Adam Lind finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and Gregg Zaun ended with two hits and a pair of RBI for Toronto.
Jays starter Jesse Litsch scattered 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs -- one earned -- for the no-decision. Scott Downs absorbed the loss for putting the game-winning run in scoring position before Bloomquist ripped a hit off of Shawn Camp.
Toronto will hand the ball to Dustin McGowan in tonight's series finale. The last time McGowan squared off with the Mariners he collected his first complete game of the season and third of his career.
McGowan faced Seattle in a 3-1 victory on June 10 at Rogers Centre, yielding just one run and five hits through nine innings of work. He is 2-1 with a 2.45 earned run average in five career games (three starts) against the Mariners.
McGowan last pitched on Friday versus Atlanta at home and suffered the loss. He allowed four runs and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings of a 4-0 setback. The righty is 6-6 with a 4.26 ERA in 17 outings this season.
Seattle won two of three games against Toronto at Rogers Centre from June 9-11. The Jays went 5-4 over each of the previous two seasons against the Mariners.
