  • O's place SS Cintron on DL

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles placed shortstop Alex Cintron on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with a strained left hamstring.

Cintron left Monday's game against the Kansas City Royals in the seventh inning when he pulled up holding the back of his left leg after reaching on an infield single immediately after touching first base with the same leg.

The 29-year-old Puerto Rican was hitting .275 with one home run and seven runs batted in over 26 games with the Orioles before the injury.

To replace Cintron, Baltimore selected the contract of shortstop Freddie Bynum from Triple-A Norfolk. Bynum played 34 games for the O's earlier this season, batting .192 with five RBI, but was designated for assignment on June 22 and sent down to Norfolk after clearing waivers.

The Orioles also transferred reliever Danys Baez from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL in order to make room for Bynum on the 40-man roster. Baez is still recovering from elbow surgery performed last September.
