  • Rox resume set with Astros

(Sports Network) - Colorado's bats showed little fatigue against Houston on Friday. The Rockies will try for a season-high fourth straight win tonight when they play the middle contest of their three-game series with the Astros at Minute Maid Park.

After winning a 22-inning marathon in San Diego in a game that began Thursday night and stretched well into the early hours of Friday, Colorado arrived in Houston around 8:15 a.m. local time on Friday after the six-hour, 16-minute adventure that was the longest game in the majors since August 31, 1993.

However, the Rockies were ready to play last night and posted 12 hits on the way to an 11-5 victory.

Garrett Atkins and Troy Tulowitzki each had two hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored for the Rockies, who also won three games in a row from April 7-9. Chris Iannetta and Jeff Baker each added two RBI, while Clint Barmes was 3-for-5 with a run scored and one driven in. Ryan Spilborghs scored three times.

Franklin Morales (1-1) got the win by going five innings and giving up four runs on five hits.

Hunter Pence went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI in for the Astros, who gave up six runs in the first inning and have dropped three of four. Chris Sampson (0-2) absorbed the loss by lasting only two-thirds of an inning and giving up six runs on six hits.

Kaz Matsui made his season debut against his former club in Friday's setback. Matsui's season got off to a late start as he was recovering from rectal surgery to repair an anal fissure.

Matsui, who hit .288 with 32 steals and 84 runs in 104 games with Colorado last year, went 0-for-3 in his debut with two walks and a run scored.

Aaron Cook will try to build off his first win of the season tonight when he starts for the Rockies. Cook went 0-1 through his first two starts with a 3.46 earned run average, but held Arizona to just three runs on eight hits and three walks in six innings of a 13-5 rout. The right-hander was able to pitch comfortably, as Colorado plated two first-inning runs and never trailed.

Cook has never lost to the Astros, going 3-0 in seven games (6 starts) against them with a 3.99 ERA. The 29-year-old didn't get a decision in either of his two starts versus Houston last year, and is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in four starts at Minute Maid Park.

Houston will send Wandy Rodriguez to the hill for tonight's start. Rodriguez picked up a pair of no-decisions in his first two starts, including a 7 1/3- inning effort against St. Louis on April 7 that saw him yield just three hits without a run and six strikeouts.

The left-hander got a victory, however, on Sunday against Florida behind seven frames of one-run, five-hit ball. He struck out seven batters, giving him 19 strikeouts to just two walks in 19 1/3 innings.

Rodriguez, 29, is 3-1 with a 3.77 ERA in five career starts versus the Rockies and won both starts against them last year while giving up just one run in 12 innings.

The Astros went 4-3 against the Rockies last season and won three of the four games held at Minute Maid Park.
