  • Cubs pound Pirates for 13 runs

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Derrek Lee and Daryle Ward each belted a two- run home run as the Chicago Cubs demolished the Pittsburgh Pirates, 13-1, in the middle contest of a three-game set at Wrigley Field.

Mark DeRosa and Ronny Cedeno drove in two runs apiece for the Cubs, who won for the fifth time in six games. Ryan Theriot went 2-for-4 and scored three runs, while Geovany Soto was 2-for-4 with a run-scoring double as the Cubs pounded out 12 hits and drew 10 walks off Pittsburgh pitching.

Jason Marquis (1-0) earned the win with six solid innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out seven. Marquis also helped himself out at the plate with an RBI double.

Tom Gorzelanny (1-2) was shelled for seven runs on six hits over just 2 2/3 innings, while Tyler Yates allowed four runs on one hit and four walks in two- thirds of an inning in relief.

Nate McLouth doubled and scored for the Pirates, who dropped their fourth straight. McLouth has now hit safely in all 17 games this season and is batting at a .384 clip.

Theriot's one-out single set the stage for Lee in the first as he crushed a line drive over the wall in left-center for his seventh homer of the year.

The Cubs extended the lead to 3-0 in the second when DeRosa worked a leadoff walk and Soto brought him all the way around to score with a double to the left field corner.

A walk to Ramirez and a single by Kosuke Fukudome put runners on first and third with one out in the third. DeRosa brought in the first run with a single, and with Soto up, Fukudome stole third and scored on a wild throw by Ryan Doumit. One out later, Gorzelanny uncorked a wild pitch to score DeRosa, and after Cedeno walked, Marquis cracked an RBI double to left to give the Cubs a 7-0 gap.

Pittsburgh picked up a run in the fifth on consecutive doubles by McLouth and Freddy Sanchez.

Chicago piled on with four more in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk by Fukudome, a sacrifice fly by DeRosa, and a two-run single from Cedeno. Ward's two-run shot in the seventh gave the Cubs a 13-1 edge, as the Pirates never presented a challenge. Game Notes
