Posey wins Golden Spikes
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Florida State catcher Buster Posey won the 2008 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award for the nation's premier amateur baseball player on Wednesday.
The 2008 ACC Player of the Year led the NCAA in batting average (.472), on- base percentage (.572) and slugging percentage (.908).
Posey, a junior, also played a major role on the mound, leading Florida State with six saves en route to not giving up an earned run in eight appearances.
"Each year it becomes increasingly more difficult for our selection committee to select just one athlete for the Golden Spikes Award, and 2008 was no different," said USA Baseball Executive Director/CEO Paul Seiler.
"Buster Posey, however, separatedhimself from the other candidates with an exceptional year both at the plate and as a leader of his Florida State ballclub. We are honored to present him with the 2008 trophy." In the 31 years that this award has been handed out, the only other catcher to take the hardware was Jason Varitek out of Georgia Tech in 1994.
Other mentionable winners throughout the years have been Terry Francona, Will Clark, Pat Burrell and J.D. Drew.
