Stanford eliminates top-seeded Miami from CWS
Omaha, NE (Sports Network) - Cord Phelps had three hits and drove in two runs with a triple, as the Stanford Cardinal stayed alive at the College World Series with an 8-3 victory over Miami Wednesday night, thus eliminating the top-seeded Hurricanes from postseason competition.
Stanford is no stranger to elimination games this postseason, having won four straight at the Stanford Regional after having dropped its regional opener to UC Davis on May 30. Now, the Cardinal advance to the Bracket 1 finals against Georgia, but need to beat the Bulldogs twice to make it to the championship series. Georgia already beat Stanford, 4-3, on Monday.
Sean Ratliff clubbed a two-run homer in the fifth inning and Phelps tripled in two in the same frame, as the Cardinal surged ahead by scoring seven times over three innings before holding on at the end.
Danny Sandbrink threw the first four innings, allowing two hits and a run, but Erik Davis picked up the victory by fanning six over four frames.
Enrique Garcia suffered the loss by allowing eight hits and five earned runs in 4 1/3 frames.
Yonder Alonso and Adan Severino each had two RBI for Miami. Yasmani Grandal homered in defeat.
The Hurricanes were set up for an elimination game after losing to Georgia, 7-4, last Saturday. The Hurricanes then beat Florida State, 7-5, on Monday, but couldn't stave off being knocked out a second straight game.
Mark Sobolewski hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning, but the Cardinal went ahead for good in the third. Phelps doubled, Joey August singled and Jason Castro followed with an RBI infield hit.
Randy Molina lofted a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
August singled in Zach Jones in the fourth before the big outburst in the fifth.
Brent Milleville singled, and one out later, Ratliff homered to right- center.
An error from Sobolewski at third allowed Toby Gerhart to reach base, and after Jake Schlander singled with two down, Phelps tripled to center.
Gerhart doubled in a run in the sixth for an 8-1 cushion before the Hurricanes scored in the seventh on Grandal's homer and in the eighth on Jason Hagerty's sacrifice fly. However, Grandal and Blake Tekotte both struck out to leave a runner at third.
Miami had runners at second and third with nobody out in the ninth, but couldn't score.
North Carolina takes on LSU on Thursday in another elimination contest, with the winner moving on to face Fresno State on Friday.
