  • Fresno State uses four homers to blast Rice in CWS opener

Omaha, NE (Sports Network) - Danny Muno finished with two hits, including a home run, and five runs batted in, as Fresno State routed Rice, 17-5, on the second day of the Men's College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium.

The Bulldogs hit four homers in the game in cruising to the win. Muno, Alan Ahmady and Jordan Ribera each hit a three-run shot, while Tommy Mendonca added a solo homer for Fresno State, which has won three NCAA Tournament games in a row and 12 of 14 overall.

Justin Wilson picked up the win after allowing just two runs on eight hits in seven innings of work for the Bulldogs, who will next play the winner of Sunday's LSU-North Carolina contest on Tuesday.

Rice starter Ryan Berry was tagged for nine runs -- five earned -- on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings and took the loss, as the Owls lost their first tournament game.

Rice had been 5-0 in the NCAA Tournament, sweeping through three games in Regionals, and twice beating Texas A&M in Super Regional play to reach the CWS.

The Owls, who surrendered more runs than they had in a single game all season, will face the loser of Sunday's contest.

Muno had a two-run single in a four-run effort from Fresno State in the second inning.

But the Bulldogs blew the game open in the fourth, scoring seven times.

Muno followed singles from Ryan Overland and Ribera with a blast to right- center field. Later, after an RBI double from Erik Wetzel, Ahmady hammered his three-run shot down the left field line for an 11-0 Fresno State lead.

A Jared Gayhart sacrifice fly brought in Chad Mozingo for Rice's first run in the home fifth. But the Bulldogs tacked on five more runs in the sixth, a rally that included a two-run single from Steve Detwiler, to up their advantage to 16-1.

Diego Seastrunk hit a three-run homer to right in the eighth inning, but it was too little too late for the Owls.
