Fresno State, North Carolina use offense to advance in CWS
Omaha, NE (Sports Network) - Fresno State and North Carolina were winners on Sunday at the Men's College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Seth Williams went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the Tar Heels doubled up LSU, 8-4.
Kyle Seager added three hits, an RBI and scored twice, while Tim Fedroff also collected three hits with two runs scored for North Carolina, which was the national runner-up the last two years.
Alex White notched the win for UNC, allowing four hits and three runs with six strikeouts over seven innings.
Michael Hollander finished 3-for-5 with a homer and scored two runs for the Tigers.
Matt Clark also homered, and both Micah Gibbs and D.J.
LeMahieu knocked in runs.
LSU starter Ryan Verdugo was battered for 10 hits and six runs -- four earned -- in 3 2/3 innings in defeat.
North Carolina has a day off before returning to the diamond Tuesday to square off against Fresno State.
Danny Muno finished with two hits, including a home run, and five runs batted in, as Fresno State routed Rice, 17-5, in the early contest Sunday.
The Bulldogs hit four homers in the game in cruising to the win. Muno, Alan Ahmady and Jordan Ribera each hit a three-run shot, while Tommy Mendonca added a solo homer for Fresno State, which has won three NCAA Tournament games in a row and 12 of 14 overall.
Justin Wilson picked up the win after allowing just two runs on eight hits in seven innings of work for the Bulldogs, who will next play the winner of Sunday's LSU-North Carolina contest on Tuesday.
Rice starter Ryan Berry was tagged for nine runs -- five earned -- on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings and took the loss, as the Owls lost their first tournament game. They face LSU on Tuesday in an elimination game.
