Florida State's Posey wins Howser Trophy
Omaha, NE (Sports Network) - Florida State catcher Buster Posey has been named the winner of the Dick Howser Trophy as college baseball's player of the year.
Posey, a consensus first-team All-America selection, was the fifth overall selection by the San Francisco Giants in last week's Major League Baseball draft.
The junior entered the College World Series with an NCAA-best .460 batting average and 92 runs batted in, and is tied for first in the nation with 26 home runs.
The Howser Trophy is named for the former Florida State shortstop and manager of the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals who died of brain cancer in 1987.
Posey is the second Seminole to receive the award; J.D. Drew was the Howser winner in 1997.
Past winners include current major league stars Jason Varitek, Todd Helton, Kris Benson, Mark Teixeira and Mark Prior.
