  • The injury occurred in batting practice before the start of spring games. The 24-year-old third-base prospect attempted to play March 8 but had to leave early.

    It's expected Gamel will start the season on the 15-day disabled list and likely will miss 8-to-9 weeks in total.

  • The tear was discovered in an MRI exam on March 5th and the right-hander had been hoping to avoid a procedure with rehabilitation.

    But Guzman met with noted orthopedic surgeon James Andrews Monday and surgery was recommended, then scheduled for next Tuesday. Andrews previously has worked on Guzman's shoulder and elbow.

SOCCER

  • Toluca, which advances with a 5-4 aggregate score, faces fellow Mexican side Pachuca in the home-and-home total-goals semifinals.

    The Crew, who were the last Major League Soccer team remaining in the tournament, jumped out to a surprising 1-0 lead in first-half stoppage time on a penalty-kick goal by Guillermo Barros Schelotto.

  • "We're excited to sign Lyle after identifying him at last year's draft as a player that could help us," United General Manager Dave Kasper said. "He is a young player with good potential, who will add quality depth to our backline. We look forward to his contributions to the club." MOTOR_RACING

  • NASCAR officials made the announcement Tuesday at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where the all-star event will be held on May 22.

    Starting this year, all drivers must pit for four tires once the field completes one lap behind the pace car prior to the start of the fourth segment.

  • Following a two-week break, the Nationwide Series returns to action with their first short-track race of the season at Bristol.

    Carl Edwards heads to Bristol with a 41-point lead over Brad Keselowski. Saturday's Nationwide race will be the first time Edwards and Keselowski compete against each other since their confrontation in last week's Sprint Cup race at Atlanta.

TENNIS

  • The third-seeded Spaniard and former world No. 1 outlasted the 19th seed Czech Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-6 (6-4) in 2 hours, 11 minutes here on the hardcourts at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

    Nadal, who won 73 percent of his first serves, beat Andy Murray in last year's Indian Wells finale and also titled here in 2007.

  • The sixth-seeded Serbian Jankovic moved into the semifinals at this top-flight hardcourt event with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over 23rd-seeded Russian Alisa Kleybanova at the beautiful Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

    Jankovic prevailed in 1 hour, 42 minutes with the help of three service breaks against the 20-year-old Kleybanova, who captured her first career WTA Tour title in Malaysia three weeks ago. Jankovic also beat Kleybanova in a Fed Cup match last month.

GOLF

  • Defending champion Retief Goosen, Jonathan Byrd, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, 2005 winner Carl Pettersson and Jeff Maggert, who got into the field on Thursday when Vijay Singh withdrew, are knotted in second place at four-under 67.

    "I was debating whether to go on ahead and come on over and I just took the late flight last night," said Maggert.

  • Dougherty, who played the par-73 Red Course at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam, made five birdies and an eagle on the back nine to climb atop the leaderboard.

    Five more players posted a 66, but four of them played the par-72 Blue course. Ireland's Peter Lawrie, Italy's Francesco Molinari, Argentina's Ricardo Gonzalez, and Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti all trailed Dougherty by a shot at six-under par.

  • In 2009, Quality Road won Florida Derby and Fountain of Youth Stakes, and last month he came back to win the Donn Handicap.

    Eskendereya, winner of this year's Fountain of Youth Stakes, will skip the Florida Derby for the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 3.

  • The two-year-old champion made his 2010 debut a winning one taking the Rebel Stakes last Saturday at Oaklawn Park by only a head over Noble's Promise. The 6-5 favorite got up in the final jump for his sixth victory in seven lifetime starts, with only one coming by more than a length.

    The Rebel was the third straight race Lookin At Lucky tangled with Noble's Promise and the Bob Baffert-trained colt has bested his arch-rival each and every time.
